All That Glitters on Twitter

People who are unfamiliar with twitter make the mistake of thinking that it is just status updates. Technically, this may be true. But it’s actually alot more than that. And that has nothing to do with better integration of photos on Twitter.

If you are on twitter telling people what you had for breakfast or telling people what you are actually doing, you are missing the point of twitter. Twitter isn’t about you. So if what you are talking about is just you and it is not entertaining or useful then a whole lot of the great things about Twitter will pass you by. You are missing out on making connections, the nuances of conversation and the organic development of ideas that is Twitter at its best.

Don’t worry. We are all boring. Just Say it in an interesting way. And if you are a brand you have to inject so much personality in to every tweet that it hurts, just a bit.

People watch. You will miss the best conversations if you don’t.

Jump in. You know when you are people watching and you want to say something but it seems like it’s just a private conversation and you wouldn’t be welcome? You would. So just do it.

Try to tweet in 120 characters. It means that people who want to retweet you in the old style won’t have to edit your tweet to fit everything in.

Create your own hashtag. Trust me, it’s so much fun.

Assume the best in people all the time. It’s so easy to misinterpret someone or be misinterpreted in 140 characters. Ask questions before you wedge your foot down your throat.
